Formic Labs was founded by engineers who spent years shipping real hardware products — and grew tired of the gap between what studios promise and what they actually deliver.
After years working at the intersection of hardware and software — across EV charging infrastructure, IoT product development, and embedded systems — we kept running into the same structural problem. Companies building hardware products were forced to manage fragmented teams: a board design contractor here, a firmware freelancer there, a software agency for the app, and a systems integrator to try and stitch it all together.
The result was predictable: integration bugs discovered late, production delays caused by decisions made in silos, and a final product that reflected the handover friction rather than the original vision. We founded Formic Labs to solve this from the ground up — a single, full-stack engineering team that owns the entire product, from concept to manufacturing handoff.
The founding team
A hardware and software engineer with deep experience in EV charging infrastructure and IoT product development. Previously led R&D for an EV charging product line through acquisition — designing systems from PCB to cloud. Brings production-tested engineering discipline and a hard-earned understanding of what it takes to ship hardware at scale.
A product engineer and designer with deep expertise in taking physical products from concept to production. Specialises in the full manufacturing stack — from early-stage prototyping and industrial design through to tooling, fabrication, and volume production. Brings hands-on mastery of the processes that turn engineered designs into manufacturable, market-ready products.
How we think
Ideas are cheap. The value is in the thing that works in the field, survives real conditions, and gets manufactured at scale. We bias toward building and testing over lengthy design phases.
Every hardware product has a real constraint — power budget, form factor, regulatory compliance, cost per unit. Great engineering is about finding the best solution within those limits, not around them.
Hardware and software are not separate problems. We design them together because every decision at the silicon level has a consequence at the cloud level, and vice versa.
We tell clients what's feasible, what's risky, and what will cost more than they think — early, not late. The goal is a product that ships, not a proposal that wins the contract.
